In 2020, a scientific study was conducted to verify the suitability of silk as a material for adequate protection against viruses (study by Parlin AF, Stratton SM, CulleyTM, Guerra PA (2020)). The study showed that silk has unique properties over other materials such as e.g. cotton and polyester and provides more effective protection against aerosolized water droplets, which represent the normal transmission pathway of viruses. Tests have shown that the structure of silk fibers effectively inhibits the penetration and absorption of water droplets, and its effectiveness is further enhanced by a thicker layer.
